History

Soon after the introduction of the Type 92 Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries was asked by the Imperial Japanese Army to develop an amphibious tank based on the Type 92. This required completely redesigning the hull, removing the bow armament & moving the driver to the center. The prototype was ready in 1933 in tests it proved successful and several more were built but it was decided not to put it into production. Instead work moved onto a special development program to design a new tank specifically made for amphibious warfare rather then modifying an existing design.
